Guernsey’s Family History is going online

The Project

The Bailiwick of Guernsey Digitisation Partnership was established in 2023 to make a wide range of Guernsey’s family history resources available online.

In 2024 the Partnership signed an agreement with Findmypast to digitise a large amount of records.

Some of the earliest church registers start in the late 1500s.

Some of the most recent records will be the Occupation ID forms – which were created during the German Occupation 1940-45.

We have consulted carefully with the Law Officers and the States Data Protection advisers – we have also taken into account the National Archives guidelines which apply across the United Kingdom.

As a result, to minimise the risk of personal data of living people being published online, we have adopted the following cut-off dates for the records:-

  • Births and Baptisms – over 100 years
  • Marriages – over 85 years
  • Deaths and Burials – over 25 years

You can access Findmypast for free in the Priaulx Library, Island Archives or the Greffe.

If you would like to search the records from home, you can take out a subscription to Findmypast – the options and costs can be found here.

After a thorough selection process, the Steering Group decided that Findmypast offered the best deal for the Bailiwick.
